About Olaf
Staff Sergeant Olaf Schmid, aged 30 years, of the Royal Logistics Corps died in Helmand province, Afghanistan on Saturday, 31st October, 2009 whilst attempting to defuse a bomb.
Staff Sergeant Schmid was an experienced soldier having been in the Army for 13 years. He was a member of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, based at Didcot, Oxfordshire and had already been responsible for making safe 64 similar bombs during his five months tour of duty in Afghanistan.
He was born in Cornwall but lived in Winchester with his wife,Christina, and his five year old stepson. He had been due to return to the UK for a short break only a few days after his untimely death.

About Olaf
upset by his death and have paid many tributes. His commanding officer said "His courage was not displayed in a fleeting moment of time - he stared death in the face on a daily basis".
